Difference between Metal Expansion Joints and Non-Metal Expansion Joints

Metal expansion joints and non-metallic expansion joints differ significantly in design, function, and application, and here are some of their main differences:

Materials and Structures

  • Metal expansion jointTypically composed of metal bellows, the bellows may be stainless steel, carbon steel, alloy steel, and the like. The corrugated shape of a metal bellows allows it to generate elastic deformation when compressed and stretched, thus absorbing displacement in the piping system.

  • Non-metallic expansion jointConstructed of non-metallic materials, such as glass fiber, ceramic fiber, silicone rubber, fluororubber, polytetrafluoroethylene, etc. They typically contain a multi-layer structure, including wear layers, insulation, sealing layers, and more, to accommodate different working conditions.

Functional Features

  • Compensation capacity: Non-metallic expansion joints tend to provide greater axial, angular and transverse displacement compensation capabilities under the same external dimensions. This is because non-metallic materials have a relatively low elastic modulus and are more likely to deform.

  • Resistance: Metallic expansion joints generate greater reverse thrust when subjected to compression or tension, while non-metallic expansion joints have less reverse thrust and less additional stress on the piping system.

  • Temperature and corrosion resistance: The non-metallic expansion joint has good high temperature and corrosion resistance, and is suitable for high temperature and corrosive environment such as hot air duct and smoke duct. Metal expansion joints depend on the choice of specific metal materials to cope with different temperature and corrosion conditions.
