FAQ

What are the types of compensators

Compensators (also known as expansion joints or expansion joints) are devices designed to absorb the stress caused by thermal expansion, contraction, shock or displacement of a pipe system, protecting the pipe system from damage. There are various types of compensators, which can be mainly divided into the following categories according to different working principles and application scenarios:

  1. Metal bellows compensator

  • The bellows compensator utilizes the elastic deformation of the bellows to absorb the axial, lateral, or angular displacement of the pipe.

  • It is divided into axial type, transverse type, angular type and pressure balance type.

  • sleeve compensator

    • The sleeve compensator consists of inner and outer sleeves that allow the inner and outer tubes to slide relative to each other, thus absorbing the axial displacement of the tube.

    • Comprises a common sleeve compensator, an elastic sleeve compensator, a bidirectional sleeve compensator, and the like.

  • Rotary Compensator (Spherical Compensator)

    • Using the relative rotation of the ball and the ball seat to absorb the multi-directional displacement of the pipeline, it is especially suitable for the complex pipeline system.

  • Natural compensator

    • Use elbows designed by the pipe itself (such as L-, Z-, or ω-elbows) to naturally absorb the thermal expansion and contraction of the pipe.

    • No additional mechanical compensator is required, but is limited by space and piping arrangement.

  • Gate Compensator

    • A special natural compensator that utilizes a door frame-like structure to absorb pipe displacement.

  • Rubber compensator (flexible joint)

    • Made of rubber or synthetic materials, it can absorb axial, lateral, and angular displacements while providing shock and noise reduction.

  • Fiber compensator

    • Made of special fiber material, suitable for high temperature, high pressure and corrosive media environment.

  • spring compensator

    • The elastic deformation of the spring is used to absorb the displacement of the pipe, which is often used for small range vibration or displacement absorption.

  • Pressure balance compensator

    • Specifically designed to absorb unbalanced pressures in piping systems to reduce forces on external structures.

  • Multilayer bellows compensator

    • It is composed of multi-layer bellows to enhance compensation and pressure resistance.

Each type of compensator has its own unique applicable scenario and working principle. Selecting the appropriate type of compensator needs comprehensive consideration according to the design parameters, working conditions, media characteristics and space constraints of pipeline system. When designing a pipeline system, engineers will select the most suitable type of compensator based on specific requirements and relevant standard specifications.
