Installation direction of bellows expansion joint

The installation direction of the bellows expansion joint is determined according to its design and application requirements, mainly to ensure that the expansion joint can correctly compensate for thermal expansion, contraction and displacement in the pipeline system, while preventing the adverse effect of media flow on the expansion joint. Here are some key points for the installation direction:

  1. Flow marker: Most bellows expansion joints with lined barrels (deflectors) have a flow direction mark, usually an arrow that indicates the direction in which the medium should flow. When installing, make sure that the direction of this arrow coincides with the actual flow direction of the media in the pipe.

  2. Direction of liner barrel: For expansion joints with liner barrels, the direction of the liner barrel should be consistent with the flow direction of the medium, which can avoid the direct impact of the medium on the bellows, reduce the accumulation of impurities in the medium in the corrugations, and at the same time prevent turbulence and vibration.

  3. Hinged expansion joint: If a hinge-type expansion joint is used, the hinge rotation plane should coincide with the pipe displacement plane to ensure that the expansion energy savings effectively absorb the expected displacement pattern.

  4. Planar angular expansion joint: The installation direction of the planar angular expansion joint should also take into account the displacement direction of the pipe to ensure that the expansion energy saving effectively compensates for the angular displacement.

  5. Expansion joint without liner: Some small or specifically designed expansion joints may not have a liner barrel, in which case the expansion joint may not have a specific mounting direction. However, it is still necessary to determine the optimal installation orientation according to the displacement direction and design requirements of the pipeline system.

  6. Drawings and instructions: Before installation, the drawings and installation instructions provided by the manufacturer should be read carefully, which will usually contain specific instructions on the direction of installation of the expansion joint.

  7. preload and displacement: Expansion joints that need to be pre-tightened shall be pre-deformed according to the drawing requirements during installation to ensure that the expansion energy saving works correctly under operating conditions.

  8. Fixing and guiding brackets: Ensure that there are sufficient fixing and guiding brackets in the piping system to support the expansion joint and limit unintended directions of displacement.

  9. Transport fixtures: Do not remove the fixtures on the transport expansion joint until the installation is complete until the expansion joint is properly positioned and connected into the ductwork.

  10. Avoid mechanical damage: Carefully protect thin-walled components such as bellows during installation to avoid damage caused by collision, welding splash, etc.

  11. Avoid torque: Twisting of the bellows should be avoided during installation, as this may cause deformation or damage to the bellows.

  12. Avoid direct forces: Do not allow spreaders or any lifting devices to act directly on the bellows, use appropriate lifting points and methods.

The determination of the correct installation direction is essential to ensure that the bellows expansion energy saving works properly under the expected working conditions, avoid early failure, and prolong its service life. If you are in doubt about the installation direction, you should consult the manufacturer of the expansion joint or a professional engineering consultant.
