Expansion joint design standard

The design criteria of expansion joints (compensators) vary depending on their type, application environment and working conditions, but there are some widely accepted and used standards worldwide, especially for metal corrugated expansion joints. Some common design criteria are listed below:

  1. American ASME Standard

  • ASME B31.3 "Process Piping": Specification for Process Piping covering the application of expansion joints in Process Piping.

  • ASME B31.1 Power Piping: Power Piping specification for expansion joint design for the Power industry.

  • ASME BPVC Section VIII Division 1 & 2: Specification for pressure vessels, relating to the design of expansion joints for pressure vessels.
